Mystery Reader Program
Surprise story time — parents reading to our younger classes.
The Mystery Reader Program is one of the most loved moments of the week in our younger classes — and nobody knows who is coming.
How it works
- A parent, grandparent or member of staff secretly arranges a visit with the class teacher.
- A few clues are shared with the class beforehand — just enough to build the excitement.
- The mystery reader arrives, the class guesses who it is, and then the story begins.
- Afterwards there is time for the children to ask questions.
Why we do it
- Children see the adults in their lives reading for pleasure — the single strongest influence on whether they read themselves.
- It builds listening skills, vocabulary and a love of stories.
- It brings families into the classroom in a warm, informal way.
- And the children absolutely love the surprise.
